2021-03-16 00:54

On the evening of March 16, 2021, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Guyana, though far apart, enjoy a deep and close friendship. The two countries have achieved fruitful results in bilateral cooperation in various fields since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The two-way trade increased last year despite the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating huge potential. Both countries are standing at an important stage of development and facing broad prospects and great opportunities. The two sides should take the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic ties next year as an opportunity to earnestly respect and accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns, promote Belt and Road cooperation, and expand mutually beneficial collaboration in such areas as energy and infrastructure, pushing for more cooperation results and lifting bilateral relations to higher levels. China stands ready to strengthen cooperation with Guyana in COVID-19 vaccines and continue to provide assistance and support within its capacity for Guyana's economic and social development.

Xi Jinping stressed that both China and Guyana are developing countries and have similar positions on a series of international and regional issues. The two sides should strengthen collaboration on issues related to the United Nations and climate change, so as to foster a fairer and more equitable reform of international systems. China expects a positive role of Guyana in promoting cooperation between China and Caribbean countries as a whole, as well as in developing the relationship between China and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Irfaan Ali said today, I and key political party leaders and ministers of Guyana speak with President Xi Jinping on the phone. I am grateful for China's generous assistance to Guyana's fight against the pandemic and I appreciate China's important leading role in various global issues. Guyana and China enjoy strong and stable relations. Guyana firmly abides by the one-China principle and considers China as the most important partner in its national development. Guyana is committed to reinforcing the relations between the two parties and two countries, and hopes to advance Belt and Road cooperation with China to enhance cooperation in infrastructure and other fields. I believe that Guyana-China relations will become even better. Guyana supports and is willing to promote the relationship between the CARICOM and China.
