Embassy Spokesperson refutes the erroneous article published in local media

On May 21, 2021, a certain Guyanese newspaper published an article entitled "Closer U.S./Taiwan Ties an Eye Opener for Guyana/China Relations" with erroneous remarks on the Taiwan question. The Chinese Embassy expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition.

There is only ONE China in the world. Taiwan is a region of China and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This is a basic fact recognized by the international community. The one-China principle is a basic norm governing international relations and a universal consensus of the international community endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution.

Taiwan question concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is China's core interest and a red line that cannot be crossed. The one-China principle is the political foundation for China to establish diplomatic relations with other countries. China firmly opposes any official exchanges in any form between Taiwan and a country having diplomatic relations with China, as well as any separatist activities pursuing the so-called "Taiwan independence", "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".

Guyana voted in favor of the UNGA Resolution to restore the legitimate rights of the People’s Republic of China at the UN in 1971 and was the first country to establish diplomatic ties with China in the English-speaking Caribbean in 1972. Ever since then, the one-China principle has always been the official standing of the Government of Guyana. Over the past 49 years, China and Guyana have conducted rich and diverse friendly exchanges and pragmatic cooperation on the basis of the one-China principle, which has brought tangible benefits to Guyana’s social economic development and Guyanese people’s well-being.

China urges the relevant Guyanese media to respect facts, observe principles, be responsible to their readers, and take a correct stance on the issues of core interests concerning China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. They should not be misled by some people's hidden agendas and send wrong signals to the public.
