Yang Jiechi Meets with President of the 76th Session of UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid

On November 26, 2021, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi met with President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly and Foreign Minister of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid via video link.

Yang Jiechi said, the United Nations is the core institution for upholding and practicing true multilateralism, and the major platform of global governance. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations. Over five decades, China has always upheld the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and defended the central role of the United Nations in international affairs. The problems facing the world are intricate and complex. The way out of them is through upholding and practicing true multilateralism and building a community with a shared future for mankind. The Global Development Initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping is another vivid embodiment of China's pushing forward the building of the community with a shared future for mankind. China will always stay committed to the ideal of the United Nations, support multilateralism, and work with other countries to make new contributions to world peace and development. China will support this session of the UN General Assembly in advancing major work in fighting the pandemic, ensuring equitable vaccine distribution, promoting sustained development, and addressing climate change.

Shahid extended congratulations on the success of the sixth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, champions the Global Development Initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping, and supports China in hosting the Beijing Olympic Winter Games. Shahid spoke highly of China's important contribution to advancing the cause of the United Nations. He said that the United Nations is willing to work with China to jointly uphold multilateralism, promote the world's post-pandemic recovery, and facilitate sustainable development.
